How It All Began At Nu-England Services

Nu-England Services was founded by James & Maryjane Fitzpatrick in 1968. They started the business out of their home in Oxford, then from their home in Millbury on Route 146. Then off to a small building that was a truck stop diner in Sutton. In 1987 it settled in its current location on Route 146 in Sutton. The business was started initially as a commercial/ janitorial / floor refinishing company. With cleaning contracts of places like Zayre’s department stores, The Fair, Spags, Bradlees, Caldor’s, Cranston print, The Dennison Manufacturing Company, Friendly’s Ice Cream, Apple Computers, Star Market, and Staples to name a few.

Before starting Nu-England Services, Jim and Maryjane were both working cleaning jobs to make ends meet. Maryjane was cleaning at Milford Savings Bank in Milford and Jim was working for a company called Sanitize Services on the stock exchange in Worcester. Jim became a crew leader there of six employees. Sanitize Services suffered from a reorganization where many employees were let go, this included Jim.

Jim started going door to door, introducing himself, and his new company Nu-England Services. Initially the task of what to say to the customer seemed daunting. Jim purchased a recorder and started practicing his speech. It never felt right, a scripted introduction. Jim traded that for his natural ability to relate and converse with people. Listening to the customer and understanding their needs was all that was needed. Maryjane handled all the billing and receivables, sometimes doing them from a typewriter on their kitchen table. At one point her office was in her youngest son Dan’s bedroom. At the time Dan didn’t realize, but seeing this work ethic from both his parents taught him that hard work pays off.

Nu-England Services went through a rough patch in 1987 with the recession. the company went from over 100 employees to roughly 8. Jim and Maryjane found ways to diversify the company to include a carpet cleaning division, Area rug cleaning, home cleaning division and even epoxy floor division.

It took many sacrifices and tough times that Jim and Maryjane went through to become the successful business that it is today.

They had two boys, Dan and Jim Jr. Jim Jr worked with Nu-England Services for many years before going off on his own.  Dan received lots of experience in all aspects of the company.  He found out the hard way that education and hands on was the best way to manage and grow a successful business.  Dan managed the carpet cleaning division for many years. Shortly after he started the water damage restoration division, then expanding to fire damage. He began attending different seminars, learning new things, and putting that knowledge to work. Dan saw missed opportunities with his customers after water damage, sewage damage, or that their carpets had reached the end of its life and was beyond cleaning. He was referring them to others for new flooring. Dan redesigned the office in Sutton to have a showroom for all types of new flooring. He did his homework and wanted to offer quality flooring for a great price. Providing quality installations and competitive prices where the big box stores were lacking. This has been such a huge success as the customers like the personal attention at our showroom and on the job. Dan’s focus on the quality of the work and product is driven by wanting to maintain a lifelong relationship with our customers.
